Clos Pegase is located in the northern part of the Napa Valley just off the Silverado Trail near Calistoga. Owner Jan Shrem built a successful publishing business in Japan and during this time married a Japanese woman named Mitsuko. She introduced Jan to wine and after 25 years in the publishing business, he entered the enology program at the University of Bordeaux. Eventually, he moved to Napa and enlisted the help of Andre Tchelistcheff, a winemaker of international renown and a seminal figure in the modern California wine industry, who guided Clos Pegase through its early years. Winemaker Richard Sowalsky embraces simplicity using natural yeasts, gentle handling, and minimal filtration to produce wines of understated elegance. Clos Pegase owns and manages more than 450 acres in the Napa Valley, with 286 planted to grapes. One-third of the grapes produced are sold to other wineries, including Acacia, Duckhorn, and Schramsberg.
This rich Cabernet Sauvignon deftly balances mineral-tinged fruit, cocoa powder tannins and full mouthfeel with a prominent mid-palate fleshiness and a long refined finish.
The label for our 2013 vintage pays homage to Dado (Miodrag Đurić). Born in 1933 in Cetinje, Montenegro, Dado studied at the School of Fine Art in Belgrade, Serbia before relocating to Paris for his first exhibition at the Daniel Cordier Gallery, where he befriended Jean Dubuffet and Roberto Matta. He moved from Paris to Hérouval, France in 1960, where he began to focus increasingly on painting and drawings expressing his aesthetic search for the essence of energy, progressively abandoning details and fine techniques in favor of more colorful and dynamic Surrealistic compositions. Dado produced Les Boulangers in 1968 during this time in Hérouval. Actively creating art throughout his life, the artist died in 2010 at age 77.
Tenma Vineyard, on an alluvial fan in Jericho Canyon in northeastern Calistoga, produces Cabernet Sauvignon wines of deep color and intensity. Our well-drained soils provided the perfect conditions in this cooler vintage, and thus in 2013, our Hommage Cabernet Sauvignon blend was crafted entirely from Cabernet Sauvignon grown in this ideal vineyard locale.
