Lindeman, an upstanding man of formidable character, started his own winery. In doing so he set his sights on civilizing a hard drinking colony nation onto more gentlemanly pursuits, such as the enjoyment of a fine drop.

Covering the most vine acreage in the state compared to any other red wine variety, Cabernet Sauvignon produces as much wine in California as Merlot and Pinot Noir combined.
