Domaine des Vercheres Macon-Villages 2018 |
A huge appellation with over 9,000 acres of vines, the entry-level Mâcon designation has a three-tier hierarchy: Mâcon, Mâcon-Villages, and Mâcon plus a village name (Macon-Pierreclos for example). Domaine des Verchères is a small family-run operation in the northern end of the Mâcon, just south of the Côtes Chalonnaise. Owner Andre Dupuis is now succeeded by his two sons, Rémi and Jean-Christophe. The chardonnay vines average 30 years of age and grow at an altitude of about 800ft.
This elegant chardonnay is fermented partially in French oak barrels and partially in stainless steel tanks. Partial malolactic fermentation and lees stirring contribute richness and depth. It delights with delicate orchard fruits on the nose, accented with hints of almond and citrus and white flowers. Subtle oak influence allows the fruit to really shine on the palate, supported by good acidity on a bright, soft, medium-bodied finish.
