The history of Weingut Wwe. Dr. H Thanisch, Erben Thanisch is extraordinary, dating back to 1636. It is currently overseen by Sofia Thanisch, representing the 11th generation and the fourth woman to manage the estate. The name of the vineyard, Bernkasteler Badstube,is indeed named after historic communal bathhouses-public bathing being imported as an idea by returning crusaders. The soil here, fine slate, makes for wines with racy acidity and great potential.
With an exceptionally warm growing season, this is richer than usual but with a pronounced bite of acidic tension and a salty tang on the finish, which works brilliantly with the slaty minerality – beautifully balanced.. The precise finish is rounded out by a lovely fleshy fruit residue coating the mouth.
