South African wines tend to fly under the radar but are growing in popularity. In the past, its wine has been sent directly to distilleries to be turned into brandy, but South African wine is gaining recognition for its excellent value. Its varieties give drinkers high quality at a very affordable price.
South Africa has a rather Mediterranean climate with a varied geography. Concentrated along the coast and especially in the west, the mountains, valleys and plateaus produce a good variety. Their wine production is considered a blend of old and new world styles for a good balance.
Many South African white wines go to brandy production, but many are making their way into our selection. Try Chenin Blanc, Chardonnay and a number of other varieties. Their wine production and exports are dominated by their complex, rich and savory reds. The region is known for Pinotage, their signature variety that is a cross of Pinot Noir and Cinsaut. This cross does not have the typical Pinot Noir characteristics. Try it for its juicy yet spicy profile. Other notable reds include Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Merlot.
