Hamilton Russell Vineyards is a family estate in the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley near Hermanus, on South Africa's southern coast, and one of the country's best-known producers of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. This Chardonnay comes only from the estate's own low-yielding vineyards.
The 2023 was fermented in French oak and aged nine months in a mix of new and older barrels. It is 13% alcohol. Decanter found a creamy, citrus-led nose with pear, lime and nutty notes, a poised, precise palate, and called it a Burgundian style at a fraction of the price of Burgundy. That matches our view.
Serve it at 50-54F in a wide white wine glass. It is very good with roast chicken, lobster, scallops or creamy pasta, and it will age well for several years.
