- Description
The 2014 Bernkasteler Graben Riesling GG is Thanisch's first grand cru from this vineyard. Citrus-colored, this wine opens with an intense and concentrated mango aroma intertwined with crushed stone flavors. Full-bodied, round and intense, this is an elegant and juicy-textured Riesling cru with a dense and aromatic, quite powerful finish with an intense fruit aroma. Bottled with just 11.5% alcohol, this is a stunningly rich and full-flavored Riesling.
"The most positive thing I can say about 2014 is that the rain unleashed the minerals," says Sofia Thanisch, quoting an often heard statement of many VDP producers this year. The Thanisch team started harvesting October 6 with a pre-selection, but then had to seep up. "We had to sort out a lot of disgusting green and acid rot to save good quality grapes." Thanisch finished on October 22 and their Doctors--four wines including the Grosses Gewächs and the Auslese--was picked October 19. The resulting wines are very, very good again, with a lovely Bernkasteler Lay Feinherb and a beautiful Doctor Kabinett.
