Wine Advocate 90 points - This wine represents Travaglini’s existential raison d’etre. The 2012 Gattinara is a pure expression of Nebbiolo sourced from the various vineyards across this estate’s holdings. The wine sees two and a half years of aging in large oak (with 10% in barrique). The color here is dark garnet, and the bouquet offers good complexity with dried fruit, spice and crushed mineral. The finish is long and silky. Vines range from 12 years to 45 years old in age..August/2017

Grapes are grown in Piedmont’s Gattinara D.O.C.G., in vineyards planted on steep slopes at an elevation of 900 - 1,300 feet. The soil is rich in iron and trace quantities of carbonate, calcium and magnesium. These unique soils combine with an ideal microclimate to yield high quality nebbiolo grapes

Following traditional red fermentation, the wine is aged for one year in French oak barriques, followed by18 months in Slovenian oak casks and six months in bottle

Outstanding with red meat, game and hard cheeses

You instantly recognize the wines of Travaglini, thanks to its distinctive bottle. In 1958, Giancarlo Travaglini created a bottle with a unique asymmetrical shape that serves as a storage vessel and a decanter for wine. There is a shallow hump in the side of the bottle that serves to catch any sediment during pouring. Today, the estate is run by Cinzia Travaglini and her winemaker husband Massimo. They farm 44 hectares of vines in the Gattinara appellation. The vast majority is Nebbiolo, but they also farm small parcels of Vespolina and Uva Rara. The vines range from six to 45 years in age. -Monica Larner, WA (8/17)

Deep ruby red with garnet reflections. Aromas of red fruit, blackberry, plum and licorice with hints of vanilla and leather. Full-bodied, with intense flavors of cherry, raspberry and spice culminating in a long and smooth finish.

Outstanding with red meat, game and hard cheeses.
