Picket Fence Top Rail Red Blend 2013 |
A picket fence always has a top rail, the unifying piece that holds the parts together. Creating Top Rail Red has allowed me to integrate my favorite Russian River, Sonoma Coast and Alexander Valley Vineyards. It's rare that winemakers get a chance to have this much fun and craft a wine based truly on flavor profiles alone rather than on a certain vineyard, grape varietal or appellation. Every winemaker that I know loves to blend because when we can break the rules, we can almost always make better wines. Top Rail Red is a delicious way for me to express what I love best about Sonoma County and Picket Fence Vineyards.
Vineyards
The grapes were handpicked at night and early morning to retain freshness and acidity. We 100% destemmed at the winery and then, after a brief cold soak, macerated separate lots in tank for about 12 days before pressing off. After being pressed, the lots went through 100% malolactic fermentation. Oak aging, with a mix of American and French oak for vanilla and spice notes, contributed body, finesse and well-balanced character.
Food Pairing Suggestions
This is a robust and versatile blend that can span food types from red pasta sauces and mushroom dishes to roasts and barbecue. The smokiness from the Pinot Noir is a natural foil for duck as well as some Asian "red spiced" or dark-sauced foods, and don't neglect to try it with something like grilled marinated tofu.
