Michelini i Mufatto D.O. Bierzo, "Post Crucifixion" 2020 |
This unique extremely old 0.114 ha pre-phylloxra vineyard on calcareous clay in Carballal de Abajo in Priaranza del Bierzo is composed of approx. 50% Mencía, 10% Palomino, 20% Merenzao, 10% Brancellao and 10% Godello. The grapes are crushed as whole bunches and spontaneously fermented in clay amphora followed by a long gentle maceration for 2 months in amphora before 12 months of storage in 2 used barrels. Aromatically, it is unusually deep with pepper, gauze, herbal extract, English licorice, red apples, ripe strawberries and flowers in an expression that is marginally cooler than the 2019 but is just as unusual and unique. In the mouth, it has the distinct impression of limestone.
Completely different in its acidity and energy from the wines from the shale subsoil, this unique wine floats over the tongue with silky texture, lively refined acidity, licorice spiced fruit and chalky young tannin. Youthful and promising, it combines the lighter shades of the 2019 with deeper and darker tones in the 2020. Again a quite unique wine from this almost prehistoric field, which the Michelini clan has revived.
