Tasting Notes
Born of a very old local tradition where select batches of special mezcals are stored in glass demi johns and buried three feet underground to age, Master mezcalero Don Lupe Pérez brings this practice to life with an extremely limited release from the 2016 crop. Made in Michoacan from local agave Americana Sahuayensis, the plants were naturally fermented and double distilled in small copper alembic pot stills. While the aromas are restrained and cerebral, the flavors are deep, complex and evolved with notes of wet stones, dried limes, white pepper, chrysanthemums, coconut, sour cherries and hickory. Incredibly elegant and refined in texture this is a supreme drinking experience meant to be savored.
Mezcales de Leyenda has proudly created the first edition in a new series of mezcales, entitled Cementerio Mezcalero. The glass-aged mezcal combines a timeless tradition with modern flavors to create a delectable drink. Aged underground in a glass container, Cementerio Mezcalero represents a centuries-old tradition of unearthing the drink for family celebrations, including birthdays, weddings, and baptisms. In a nod to its heritage, the new line is designed to give back to society via a charitable contribution to Tzitzio, Michoacán to help promote the practice of traditional mezcal unearthing, which occurs during the celebration of Día de Muertos.
With aromatic flavors of roasted chestnuts and dried fruit, the Cementerio Mezcalero is the perfect drink for any celebratory occasion. It is double distilled, contains 100 percent maguey and Agave Americana Sahuayensis. Brewed and aged in Tzitzio, Michoacán, this newly revitalized tradition proudly embodies the heritage of the land with its buttery notes, mild smoke, high acidity, and long finish. In order to maintain the social significance of a fine mezcal, only 435 bottles of the 2016 Cementerio Mezcalero Edition have been produced.
