It was originally part of the holdings of the Benedictine Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier, which was the leading wine estate on the Mosel during the Middle Ages. During the Napoleonic secularization, the abbey’s vineyards were sold off and one of the Loewen family's ancestors acquired parcels in the Maximiner Klosterlay, laying the foundation for what is now Weingut Carl Loewen.
