Scent of spices and stone fruits with some notes of red berries. It is bright and fresh with some residual sugar. Fine acidity with some delicate honey notes and a long spicy finish. The refined spices from this wine makes it an ideal companion for Asian spicy dishes. This Kabinett is best consumed when young and fresh.
From old plots inside the upper one-third of the cru, the 2016 Ürziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett (AP 5 17) was fermented in stainless steel and bottled in March 2017. The wine opens with a very clear, bright, pure and floral-scented bouquet with flinty and phenolic notes. Round, lush and piquant on the palate, this is a highly elegant, complex and salty Wurzgarten Kabinett with great tension, balance and serious terroir expression. The finish is pure and salty but also intense and sensual in its lush fruit. ”Working these plots means 14,000 hours per hectare and year,” says Christian Hermann. This is an impressive Riesling and a fabulous Kabinett from 60- to 80-year-old vines and sold at a moderate price.
This represents Hermann’s first (October 10) picking of the vintage, from 60- to 80-year-old vines ranging from 78 to 80 Oechsle. Along with that early date and modesty of must weight has come acid retention unusual for the present collection and, amazingly, sufficient to hold 48 grams of residual sugar to an entirely supportive role. Classic Wurzgarten scents of strawberry and kiwi mingle with honeydew melon, presaging a luscious, delicate (7.5% alcohol) palate and a soothing, lightly refreshing, mouthwateringly salt-tinged finish. This is a fine example of its genre. Quite a lush wine for kabinett. Has a very crisp acidity. A bit tannic at the finish and this pulls on the brakes.
