The Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques was touches by frost this year, 25% lost compared to last year, picked on 3 October. There was a touch of reduction on the nose, but otherwise there is plenty of black cherry, red plum and cranberry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with juicy ripe tannin that lend this more rondeur than the Champeaux (partly because this was fully destemmed). Good length here, and there is a lovely satin-like, saline finish. Excellent.
Very ripe aromas and flavors of black raspberry and smoked meat are complicated by a Mazis-like rocky quality as well as some roasted torrefaction. Wonderfully sweet, concentrated, thick wine with the integrated acidity to give it excellent definition and cut. Finishes quite dry and classic, with subtle persistence.
