This is also quite ripe with liqueur-like aromas of black cherry, violet, spice and plenty of floral influences. The sleeker if not bigger medium-bodied flavors are dense to the point of being borderline thick, even syrupy yet somehow manage to remain vibrant and intense on the lingering finish that also flashes a touch of warmth as well as a hint of bitter pit fruit. This firmly structured effort should age effortlessly for years to come.
The other great domaine of Pommard, and three great expressions of the terroir of Pommard, yet a very different style to the Clos des Épeneaux of Comte Armand. Yves Confuron, the régisseur, describes the difference between the two top wines by saying that the Grand Clos is 'terreux' while the Rugiens is 'aérien'.
This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
