94/100 Zonin's Amarone della Valpolicella from Veneto is a concentrated, full-bodied red wine offering notes of wild red currant, raspberry, white pepper and charred forest floor. This dry wine displays silky tannins and bright acidity that will continue to develop over the next nine years. Serve it at room temperature with eggplant casserole topped with aged pecorino as the wine's powerful structure stands up to the sharp cheese, or pair it with grilled game sausage where the wine's savory depth complements the spiced meat. Winemaker Franco Giacosa crafts this taut Amarone using the traditional appassimento method, drying grapes to concentrate their sugars and flavors before fermentation, creating remarkable intensity and chewy texture. The wine's dense attack and licorice complexity will evolve into greater sophistication with five or six years of bottle age.
