DESCRIPTION
At the southern end of the illustrious Côte d'Or, just southwest of Chassagne-Montrachet, the Santenay appellation is a productive one--only Gevrey, Beaune and Meursault make more wine--but modest in terms of terroir quality and thus reputation; that said, there are good-quality wines to be found from in and around its 14 premier crus. The Grand Clos Rousseau is one of those, on the border of the Maranges appellation, and is known for wines of good weight and fruit character. Thomas has a .41-hectare plot which was planted in 1974 and purchased by the Moreys in 1978. It lies on a gentle slope at an elevation spanning 250 to 280 meters with light, stony, brown clay-limestone soils.
This red wine is relatively light and well-rounded. The colour is brilliant and dark, almost black. Its aromas are of violets, gooseberry and black cherry.
This red wine is relatively light and can pair with a wide variety of foods. The grape prefers cooler climates and the wine is most often associated with Burgundy, Champagne and the U.S. west coast. Regional differences make it nearly as fickle as it is flexible.
