DESCRIPTION
Solaia comes off a steep, stony slope in the Tignanello vineyard in Chianti Classico, planted mostly to Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese and Cabernet Franc. It spends around 18 months in French oak barriques. Ripe wild berry on the nose, blackberry and blackcurrant with plum and fig behind them, then pepper and licorice. The palate is rich but tightly wound, the tannins silky rather than grippy, and the finish runs long on bitter cocoa and coffee. One of the wines that made the Super Tuscan category, and it needs a decade to show why.
