Tasca d'Almerita has made wine in Sicily since 1830, and in 2007 it started Tenuta Tascante on the north slope of Mount Etna, between Randazzo and Castiglione di Sicilia. This Etna Bianco is 100% Carricante, the native white grape of the volcano.
It is fermented and aged in stainless steel, with a few months on the lees and no oak. Critics describe citrus, peach and wet stone, with white pepper, crisp acidity and a long mineral, slightly salty finish. Etna whites are some of the most interesting in Italy right now, and this is an affordable way in.
Serve it chilled, around 48-52F, in a white wine glass. Drink it with oysters, grilled swordfish, spaghetti with clams, fresh goat cheese or a plate of fried calamari.
