DESCRIPTION
Rust en Vrede was established in 1694 in the Helderberg area of Stellenbosch, South Africa. Since 1977 the Engelbrecht family has made only red wine here, with a focus on Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah. The north-facing vineyards grow on soils from granite and sandstone, in a warm pocket of the Helderberg.
This is 100% estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon, picked and sorted by hand, with parcels and clones made separately. It gets a 21-day maceration with pump-overs and punch-downs, then 18 months in 300-liter French oak barrels, 20% new. The 2022 is deep ruby. The nose shows black currant, dark chocolate, tobacco, cedar, nutmeg and pencil shavings. On the palate black currant, black cherry, plum and mulberry meet cedar and tobacco, and the finish is fresh and long. A classic, structured Stellenbosch Cabernet. The winery gives it 10 to 15 years of aging potential.
Serve at 62 to 65°F in a large Bordeaux glass, and decant it if you open it young. Pair with grilled ribeye, lamb chops or a venison stew.
