DESCRIPTION
Selbach-Oster is a family estate in the Mosel, and this Spätlese comes almost entirely from the Zeltinger Himmelreich vineyard, on the blue Devonian slate the region is famous for. It is fermented naturally in old Mosel Fuder, the large oak casks used along the river for centuries.
Spätlese means late harvest, so the grapes are riper and the wine has some sweetness. Expect peach, apricot and lime, a light body, and bright acidity that keeps it clean rather than sugary. The slate gives it a stony finish.
Serve it cold, around 45-48F. It is one of the best wines you can pour with spicy Thai or Indian food, and it is lovely with pork, ham or a fruit tart. Low alcohol makes it easy to enjoy on a weeknight.
