Von Winning is a leading estate in Germany's Pfalz, and this is its Riesling Sekt, a German sparkling wine made from Riesling in an Extra Brut, very dry style.
Expect white fruit, crisp and crunchy, with a fully ripe edge. With air it gains complexity, moving toward nectarine and crisp Cox's Orange apple, with a nice dose of salinity on the long finish. It's sharper and more aromatic than most Champagne at this price, and that's a good thing.
Serve it cold, around 45F, in a white wine glass. It's a great aperitif and a natural match for oysters, sushi, fried snacks or Asian dishes with a little spice. A smart bottle for anyone who loves Riesling or wants a sparkling wine that's a bit different.
