Agustin and Valeria Huneeus built Quintessa in eastern Rutherford: 160 acres of vines across 26 blocks between the Vaca mountains and the Napa River, farmed organically and biodynamically. This is the half bottle of the 2022.
Five varieties go into the blend and the proportions change every year. Cassis, black cherry and violets, with tobacco leaf, sage and thyme, then supple tannins over dark chocolate and crushed rock. Polished, not showy.
The 375ml is a smart way to drink a top Napa red: a couple of glasses each, with no pressure to finish a full bottle. Decant it for 30 minutes and serve around 62-64F with steak, lamb or mushrooms. Also a good way to try Quintessa before buying more.
