Kopke was founded in 1638, which makes it the oldest Port house still trading. A 40 Year Old Tawny is a blend of Ports that have spent decades in wooden casks, slowly turning from red to amber and from fruity to nutty.
This one is dark orange amber with a golden edge. It's medium weight and silky, with fresh acidity that stops it from feeling heavy. Figs, marzipan and walnuts lead the way, with a hint of warmth on a very long finish. Rich and tasty, with real depth.
Serve it slightly cool, around 55-60F, in a small wine glass. It's wonderful with blue cheese, crème brûlée, pecan pie or a handful of roasted nuts. Unlike vintage Port, an old tawny keeps for weeks after opening, so you can enjoy it a glass at a time. A special gift for someone born 40 years ago.
