DESCRIPTION
Domaine Pierre Gelin was founded in 1925 in Fixin, just north of Gevrey-Chambertin. Pierre's grandson, Pierre-Emmanuel, runs it today and farms organically. In 1961 Pierre bought vines in Gevrey, including the Clos de Meixvelle, a 4-acre vineyard near the heart of the village that the domaine owns outright.
The vines are about 70 years old, on alluvial soil over limestone. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir, fully destemmed, fermented with native yeasts and aged 20 to 24 months in French oak, 15% new. Winebow describes black berries, black cherries, herbs and flowers with sturdy tannins. This is classic, firm Gevrey, and it rewards patience.
Decant it for 30-60 minutes and serve at 58-62F in a Burgundy glass. Coq au vin, roast game birds, duck and mushroom dishes are the natural match.
