Domaine Pierre Gelin was founded in 1925 in Fixin, at the northern end of Burgundy's Cote de Nuits, and is run today by the founder's grandson, Pierre-Emmanuel Gelin. The vineyards are farmed organically and certified by Ecocert. Clos Napoleon is the domaine's monopole and its flagship: about 4.5 acres of premier cru that Pierre Gelin bought in 1950, when the land was not even planted.
The vineyard takes its name from Claude Noisot, an admirer of Napoleon who owned it in the 19th century. The vines are now over 60 years old on clay and limestone. The wine is 100% Pinot Noir, fermented with native yeasts and aged in Burgundy barrels with about 15% new oak. The importer describes cherry, earth and wood spice with depth and length, and calls it one of the richer, more structured wines of the Fixin appellation. Fixin sits next door to Gevrey-Chambertin, and this is a good way to get that firm style for less.
Give it a short decant, about 30-45 minutes, and serve at 60-62F in a Burgundy glass. Pour it with duck confit, roast lamb, beef bourguignon or Epoisses. It will also keep well in the cellar for several years.
