DESCRIPTION
Hennessy X.O is where the category's benchmark sits, and it has been there a long time. Maurice Hennessy created it in 1870 for his own circle and, in doing so, invented the "Extra Old" designation every other house now borrows.
The blend runs to around a hundred eaux-de-vie, the oldest approaching thirty years, drawn largely from the chalk soils of Grande Champagne. Age shows as weight rather than sweetness: dried fig and raisin on the nose, then toffee, cocoa, candied orange, and a long spiced finish with real grip. It's a big, dark cognac and it doesn't apologise for it.
Serve neat in a tulip glass at room temperature — a snifter is traditional, but a tulip holds the aromatics better. A single large ice cube opens it up on a warm evening without wrecking it. Good after dinner with dark chocolate, a cigar, or nothing at all.
