Great Jones Bourbon, Rye and Four Grain Bourbon

The first Manhattan-based distillery in over 100 years, Great Jones Distilling Co. recently opened in NoHo after six years of construction and rigid city regulations. With two columned, custom combination copper pot still and the subway system running below, the 28,000 square-foot space will host distillery tours, tastings and opening September 2022, a restaurant, speakeasy and event venue (the secret tunnel discovered in construction now runs behind the speakeasy). Founded by Proximo Spirits with owner and 11th generation spirits maker Juan Domingo Beckman, they launched with three whiskies: Great Jones Straight Bourbon, Four Grain Bourbon and Rye Whiskey, each from grains solely grown in Upstate New York’s Black Dirt region, aging five years in new charred American oak barrels. The bourbon is well integrated and crowd-pleasing, the four grain interesting though heavy on a cherry wood note, and the rye overall my top pick for sipping neat and in cocktails.
