Clos de Vougeot is the largest grand cru in the Cote de Nuits, fifty-one hectares walled in by the Cistercians, with clay and limestone running through it and holdings split between dozens of growers. Young, a good Clos de Vougeot is dense and dark but juicy, with a pronounced austerity, and it takes a good ten years to come round.
