Ben Ryé is Donnafugata's sweet wine from Pantelleria, a small volcanic island between Sicily and Tunisia. The name means "son of the wind" in Arabic, a nod to the winds that sweep across the island.
It's a Passito di Pantelleria, made from Zibibbo (Muscat of Alexandria) grapes, part of which are dried in the sun before they're added to the fermenting juice. That's where the concentration comes from. Expect apricot, candied orange peel, honey and dried figs, with fresh acidity that keeps it from feeling sticky.
This is a 375ml half bottle, which is the right size for dessert. Serve it chilled, around 50F, in a small glass. Try it with blue cheese, almond cookies, fruit tarts or cannoli. A lovely end to a dinner and a thoughtful gift for anyone who likes sweet wine.
