Champ Gain sits high on the hillside in Puligny-Montrachet, just below La Garenne. The name comes from land reclaimed from the forest. Domaine Faiveley has owned its parcel since 2014.
That height matters. It is cooler up there, and the site gives Puligny with bright acidity and floral notes rather than weight. Expect white flowers, lemon, green apple and a stony freshness, with the gentle richness that good Burgundian Chardonnay picks up from oak.
Serve it cool, around 50-52F, in a wide white wine glass so the aromas open up. Very good with lobster, scallops, roast chicken or a creamy pasta. It drinks well young and will gain depth over the next several years.
