Le Macioche is a small estate in Montalcino, and the 2017 Brunello marks a milestone: it was the first vintage made entirely under the Cotarella family, one of Italy's best-known wine families. It was released in 2021, after the long aging Brunello requires.
Brunello di Montalcino is 100% Sangiovese, and the best are both powerful and elegant. Expect cherry and plum, dried herbs, leather and spice, with firm tannins and bright acidity. 2017 was a warm year in Tuscany, which tends to mean a riper, more generous style.
Decant it for an hour and serve around 62-64F in a large glass. It's made for bistecca alla fiorentina, wild boar ragù, roast lamb or aged pecorino. A good Brunello to open now or keep for a few more years.
