Yamazaki is Japan's first malt whisky distillery, near Kyoto, and the 12-year-old has been its flagship since 1984. For many people it was their first Japanese whisky, and it still sets the standard.
It's delicate rather than big. Floral on the nose, with orchard and tropical fruit, citrus and honey. The palate is silky and balanced, with gentle spice and a faint smoky note, and the finish keeps coming back to honey, citrus and warm spice.
Drink it neat, with a splash of water, or as a highball with very cold soda and plenty of ice, the way it's often served in Japan. It's good with sushi, grilled fish or simple salty snacks. A fine gift for anyone curious about Japanese whisky.
