Volnay is the Côte de Beaune village known for the most elegant, perfumed red Burgundies. Xavier Monnot is a family domaine based in nearby Meursault, working with vineyards across the Côte de Beaune.
Expect the Volnay style: red cherry, raspberry and floral notes, with silky tannins and a light, graceful texture. Pinot Noir from Volnay is about finesse rather than power.
Serve it slightly cool, around 58-60F, in a wide Burgundy glass. Roast chicken, duck, salmon and mushroom dishes all work. It's young, so a little air helps. A good bottle for anyone who prefers red wine light and fragrant over big and oaky. Volnay is one of the Côte de Beaune villages where red wine, not white, is the main event, and it rewards a little patience in the glass.
