Valle Reale farms its vineyards in Abruzzo, in central Italy, at more than 1,100 feet above sea level, in the mountains between Abruzzo's Gran Sasso and Majella national parks. This Montepulciano d'Abruzzo DOC is made from organically grown Montepulciano from two sites, Popoli and Capestrano.
The importer explains the blend this way: the rocky, exposed Popoli vineyard brings fragrance and freshness, and the hotter Capestrano site with silty soils adds richness. In the glass it is bright ruby, with blueberry, cherry, licorice and sweet spice, medium body and plenty of acidity. It is a lighter, fresher Montepulciano than most, which makes it an easy weeknight red.
Serve it a little cool, around 60F, in a standard red wine glass. It suits pizza, pasta with tomato sauce, grilled sausages and roast pork. It does not need decanting.
