Six Dogs Blue comes from Six Dogs Distillery, on a farm at the edge of South Africa's Karoo, near the village of De Wet. It was the first blue gin launched in South Africa, and the name has two sources: the blue pea flower used to make it, and Blue, the smallest dog in the founders' original pack of six.
The blue pea flower infusion gives the gin its natural bright blue color. Add a good tonic and the color shifts to light pink, which never fails to get a reaction at the table. Under the color it is a classic dry gin with a gently floral character, with hints of freshly cut lucerne over hand-picked rose pelargonium. Floral, but still dry.
Build a gin and tonic in a large wine glass or highball over plenty of ice, pour the tonic in front of your guests, and garnish with a slice of grapefruit or a sprig of rosemary. It also works in a gin sour or a simple martini. Serve with light snacks: smoked salmon, olives or soft goat cheese.
