Brunello di Montalcino comes from the hills around the town of Montalcino in Tuscany, and it holds Italy's top DOCG classification. It's made from 100% Sangiovese Grosso and can't be released until five years after harvest, so a 2021 is only now arriving. Sant'Arturo is a well-priced way into the region.
In the glass it's a brilliant ruby. Rose petals on the nose, then bold red fruit and a twist of orange peel on the finish. It's medium-bodied, with the bright acidity that makes Brunello so good with food. Drinkable now, and it will improve with more time.
Open it an hour before dinner and serve around 60 to 64F. It's made for roasted meats, wild boar ragù, mushroom risotto and well-aged cheeses like Pecorino or Parmigiano. A great bottle for a Sunday dinner, or a gift for someone who loves Italian reds.
