Sessantanni means "sixty years", and it refers to the age of the vines. San Marzano makes it from old Primitivo vines in Manduria, down in Puglia, the heel of Italy. Old vines give less fruit, but what they give is concentrated, and that's the whole story of this wine.
It's dark and generous. Ripe black fruit and berry jam, warm spice and a touch of wood. The texture is dense and velvety, the tannins are soft, and the finish is long and a little sweet-fruited. If you like big, plush reds, this is easy to love. If you like lean ones, it may be too much.
Serve around 62F, and give it half an hour open. It's made for food: barbecue ribs, lasagna, grilled sausage or aged pecorino. At this price it's a crowd-pleaser for dinner parties and an easy gift.
