Schloss Gobelsburg is a historic estate in Austria's Kamptal. The wine is named for the Cistercian monks who farmed these slopes from 1171.
It is a blend of Zweigelt, St. Laurent and Pinot Noir from the estate's cooler sites around Gobelsburg and Langenlois. The grapes are picked for rosé from the start, not bled off from a red wine, and the aim is a style closer to white wine: elegant, fresh and lean. Expect pale pink color, tart summer berries and rose petal on the nose, then strawberry, melon and blood orange with a spicy note in the middle. It is light, dry and lively, with a clean finish and a little grip. Restrained rather than fruity.
Serve chilled, at 46 to 50°F, in a white wine glass. Try it with salade niçoise, grilled shrimp, goat cheese or Wiener schnitzel.
