The colour is an intense deep ruby while the aroma is ample and complex, with dominant notes of bitter cherry, aromatic herbs and hints of thyme, liquorice and coffee. The result is a wine with a marked personality with silky and highly persistent tannins that are nonetheless never invasive.

This top-shelf wine now boasts Superiore status. This is a relatively new addition to the appellation. The 2013 Aglianico del Vulture Superiore Serpara is a full-bodied expression that shows power and directness. That said, efforts have evidently been taken to minimize any impression of heaviness or overextraction. Indeed, the wine glides over the palate with a long, silky texture, imparting fine-tuned aromas of black currant, grilled herb and scorched earth.
