Pol Roger is a family-run Champagne house, and the Brut Réserve is its everyday Champagne. It's famous for being Winston Churchill's favorite house, but you don't need that story to enjoy it.
The house style is richness from Pinot Noir with crisp acidity to balance it. Pear and peach, fresh bread and biscuit, a fine, pinpoint mousse and a slightly salty finish. It's soft and silky, easy to like, and better than its price suggests.
Serve it cold, around 45F, in a tulip glass. It's good with almost anything: oysters, smoked salmon, fried food or just salted nuts. A great house Champagne for parties, and a smart gift for people who already know Veuve.
