Domaine Pierre Gelin was founded in 1925 in Fixin, the village at the northern end of the Cote de Nuits, and is still run by the Gelin family. Les Hervelets is one of Fixin's premier cru vineyards. It sits beside Les Arvelets at the top of the slope, with a little more marl in the soil.
The importer notes that the grapes are fully destemmed and the wine ages 20 to 24 months in barrel, about a quarter of them new, and is bottled unfined and unfiltered. Fixin is often firm and rustic, and Hervelets tends to show more finesse, with bright black fruit and herbs. It is good value next to the better-known names of Gevrey-Chambertin just to the south.
Serve it at 58-62F in a Burgundy glass. Pair it with duck breast, roast chicken, mushroom dishes or a washed-rind cheese. The 2022 can be opened now with an hour of air, or kept for several more years.
