Oban is one of the smallest distilleries in Scotland, sitting in the middle of a fishing town on the west coast, where the Highlands meet the islands. The 14 Year Old is its classic bottling, and it sits neatly between the soft Speyside malts and the smoky Islays.
There's sweetness and spice up front: oak, maple sugar, fresh apple, clove, black pepper and cinnamon on the nose. The palate dries to a spicy middle before a long finish with a concentrated maple note.
Neat or with a splash of water is best. Try it with smoked fish, a sharp cheddar or a plate of oysters. It's the malt to give someone who likes Scotch but isn't sure about peat, and at this price it's an easy bottle to keep open.
