Blagny is a tiny hamlet tucked above Meursault and Puligny-Montrachet, and its red wines are some of Burgundy's quiet secrets. Domaine Matrot, a family estate in Meursault, makes this Pinot Noir from the Premier Cru La Pièce sous le Bois.
It's an old-fashioned Burgundy in the best sense. Expect a scent of roses with sleek raspberry and black cherry, and a silky texture that feels completely integrated. It's not big or showy. It's graceful and lovely to drink.
Serve it slightly cool, around 58-60F, in a wide Burgundy glass. Roast chicken, duck, mushrooms or a simple pork roast all work. For anyone who loves red Burgundy, it's a chance to try a Premier Cru from a village most people have never heard of, at a fair price.
