Marco De Bartoli was the man who brought back the old, unfortified style of wine from Marsala in western Sicily. Vecchio Samperi is his Vino Perpetuo, made from Grillo in a solera, where older wine is topped up with younger wine year after year.
It's unlike anything else. Bright amber, with a style somewhere between oxidative and fresh. Expect balsamic notes, eucalyptus and fresh mint, camphor and dried herbs, with a warm, soft texture. It's dry, not sweet like modern Marsala.
Serve it cool, around 55F, in a white wine glass. Try it as an aperitif with almonds and olives, or with aged cheeses, bottarga or a fish stew. A wine for curious drinkers and fans of sherry.
