The 2018 Cristal is a landmark release for Louis Roederer, arriving for the house's 250th anniversary and Cristal's 150th. Cellar Master Jean-Baptiste Lécaillon rates 2018 among the finest vintages he has seen, and the warm, dry year led him to draw on a record 57 organic Grand Cru plots.
It's 57% Pinot Noir and 43% Chardonnay, with no malolactic and 28% of the base wine made in French oak. Still very young: crunchy yellow apple and juicy pear first, then honeysuckle, chalk dust, white pepper and a hint of allspice. Rich from the warm year, with pristine acidity holding it together.
Serve it around 50F in a white wine glass, not a flute. It's magnificent with caviar, langoustines or a simple roast chicken. Drink one now and keep one for a decade.
