IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS

Wine Enthusiast 90 points - Soy sauce, olive brine, peat, honey, oloroso Sherry, brewers yeast, bread dough, barley malt and cigar smoke in the bouquet. The flavor that magically includes the innate intense peatiness of Islay malts and the masterly employment of oak barrels phase defines "classy Islay. Concludes sweetly, without sacrificing the tangy, astringent peatiness that is inherent. Gorgeous. - P.P. (4/1/2004) - 90-95.June/2006

Ultimate Beverage Challenge 92 points - Bold aromas of peat smoke and chimney soot marry with vanilla cake and citrus oil to make an incredibly complex and inviting nose. The palate is lightly honeyed, but ultimately gives way to the aggressive but delicious flavors of campfire and crushed seashell..March/2017

Other 92 points - Lagavulin is a classic example of how smoke isn’t a blunt instrument that covers everything in a fog, but an element that works with all the flavors produced in distillation and maturation. Lagavulin isn’t ‘smoky,’ its peat moves into a weird territory of Lapsang Souchong tea and pipe tobacco, fishboxes and kippers. It smells of laurel and light cereal, but is always sweet. The palate shows more creosote, with hints of kelp and a little touch of iodine. Complex. - Dave Broom.August/2012

Whisky Advocate 92 points - Peatheads the world over love Lagavulin for its sweet, subtle character and enduringly affordable price point. At a time when some NAS malts of more dubious quality are going for much more money, Lagavulin remains consistent, classic, and true to itself: a whisky you can always count on..August/2017
