Château La Nerthe is one of the oldest estates in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, with around 220 acres of vines around the château. The vineyards run down a slope of sandy-clay soils covered by the large round stones the appellation is famous for.
Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge is a blend led by Grenache, usually with Syrah and Mourvèdre. Expect a warm, generous red with ripe raspberry, plum and kirsch, notes of garrigue herbs, pepper and licorice, and soft, round tannins.
Serve it around 62-64F, after an hour in a decanter if you can. It is great with roast lamb, beef stew, duck or a cassoulet. A classic Southern Rhône for anyone who likes rich, savory reds.
