Insignia is Joseph Phelps' flagship and one of the first Bordeaux-style blends made in Napa. The 2016 is mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, with Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and a little Malbec, aged 24 months in new French oak.
It's silky and layered rather than loud. Blueberry, blackberry and black currant, cloves and cedar, with hints of chocolate, walnut, graphite and violets. The tannins are fine but firm, and the finish is long. Critics agree it needs time; a few more years in the bottle will reward you.
If you open it now, decant it for at least an hour and serve around 62F in a large glass. Prime rib, lamb or a hard aged cheese. A collector's bottle and a serious gift.
