Herradura has been making tequila in Amatitán, Jalisco, since 1870. Legend is its special añejo, and what makes it different is the barrel. It ages for 12 months in heavily charred new American white oak barrels that have been deeply grooved inside, so the tequila touches more toasted wood as it rests.
You can see it in the glass: the color is deep and rich for a one-year añejo. It's made from 100% blue agave, naturally fermented, and the result is velvety and smooth, with toasted oak and caramel sweetness over cooked agave.
Sip it neat or over a single large cube, the way you would a bourbon or a cognac. It works well after dinner and pairs with grilled meats or dark chocolate. A good bottle for a whiskey drinker who is curious about aged tequila.
